Testing Rocks and Minerals
Physical Properties
Many rocks and minerals can be identified simply based on their appearance; how they look. Use a magnifying glass to make sure you don't miss any important details you may not be able to see with the naked eye.
The Learning Zone has a great website with information on each of the properties to describe rocks.

Hardness Testing
Some minerals are harder than others. Finding out how hard they are can help you determine what type of mineral it is based on the "Mohs Scale." Fredrich Mohs invented this scale in 1812 by ordering minerals from soft to hard. The minerals can only scratch those that are softer than it. The softest mineral is talc and the hardest mineral is a diamond.

Streak Test
Rub your piece of rock or mineral against a porcelain tile, or "streak plate", and look at the colour of the streak. The "streak" is the colour of a mineral when it is crushed to a powder. Most minerals are the same colour as their streaks, but there are a few exceptions; some have are a different colour when powdered. This will help you identify what kind of mineral it is.
