Needs Of Living Things
Classifying Living Things
Producers
Producers are plants that create their own food through Photosynthesis. Decomposers
Decomposers are organisms that break down dead plants and animals to turn them into nutrients for other plants to consume. ONline GamesWorksheet |
Consumers
Consumers are living things that need to eat, or consumer, other foods in order to create energy. There are three types of consumers; herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. |
Predators
Predators are animals that hunt and kill other animals for food. Predators are Carnivores or Omnivores which means their diet includes meat.
Prey
Prey are the animals that are hunted as food and are usually smaller and weaker than the Predator. Prey can be Herbivores, Omnivores or even Carnivores being hunted by bigger Carnivores.

Food Chains and Food Webs
A food chain shows the path of energy from one living thing to another. Food webs always start with a producer, a plant, because they create their own energy through Photosynthesis. Food chains also show the relationships between living things by what they eat.
Here is a food chain. It starts with a producer, the grass, that is consumed by an herbivore, the grasshopper. The energy from the grass, that it has stored from the sun through Photosynthesis, is then used by the grasshopper.
The energy from each organism continues to be passed along, as shown by the arrows, as each living thing is consumed.
When the eagle dies the decomposers, or bacteria, break it down into more nutrients that will help in beginning the cycle again when the grass uses it to grow.

Adaptations
Adaptations are special features that help plants and animals survive in their environment.
An adaptation can be Physical or Structural.
An adaptation can be Physical or Structural.
Physical Adaptations
A physical adaptation is the physical part of the plant or animal that helps it survive. Some examples of physical adaptations are webbed feet, feathers, sharp claws, large beaks, wings, fur and scales. |
Behavioural Adaptations
Behavioural adaptations refers to how an animal acts or react in order to survive. This could be how prey react when being attacked or animals that migrate during the winter months. |
